The publication of the Board of Enquiry report into the aviation incident reported to have occurred on then morning of 3/12/95 when a single engine Piper aircraft Reg No 9HABU disappeared with six people on board when enroute from Djerba in Tunisia to Malta makes for interesting reading not because of their decision to blame the pilot

DESMOND BOOMER has a wife and five children who live in Co. Down. He worked in the Libyan oil fields as an engineer for a company based in Britain. Because of international sanctions imposed against Libya by the UN in 1992 after the Lockerbie bombing, foreign workers were forced to fly to a neighbouring country and travel onwards to Libya by road. For Boomer and other workers, the preferred route was an international connection to Malta and a private flight from the island to Djerba Airport in Tunisia. Boomer was en route home to Belfast for his Christmas holidays when he disappeared. There are three possibilities concerning the disappearance. The first and one that cannot be easily dismissed is that Desmond Boomer and his fellow passengers were in the wrong place at the wrong time when Islamic fundamentalists arrived to exact revenge on their pilot, Carmel Bartolo, a marked man. Bartolo was the owner of a small private airline called Excelair. On November 5, 1995 precisely one month before Boomers mysterious disappearance a local Maltese newspaper Kull Hadd, in an act of gross journalistic

THE FATHER of an Ulsterman who mysteriously disappeared in Tunisia exactly five years ago, claims his son may still be ALIVE.
Former SDLP Belfast city councilor Cormac Boomer fears his son, Dessie. who was reportedly on a plane that vanished onto thin air, may have been caught up in a terrorist incident. He told the Extra last night that the information he had suggested his son could still be alive….somewhere. Its the latest twist in a saga that has led to one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in aviation history. Dessie Boomer has never been seen since disappearing with five fellow travellers in December 1995.

Letter from Brian Cowan, TD
By: Mark Boomer
Dec, 2000
Letter from Brian Cowan, TD. An acknowledgement of letter to Brian Cowan TD from his Private Secretary, today I received a phone call from John Lawton. He began by telling me that your article in the IOS had generated enquiries from other papers, he then moved to discussing my request for government support in my quest for information about my missing son, he enquired was there not some other channels that I might consider using ie legal action against the authorities in Malta. I pointed out that I had already spent considerable amounts of my own resources in my ongoing search and could not undertake an action of this kind as it would involve hiring legal representation here and in Malta. Hence my reason for asking for government support.

Response from Irish Foreign Affairs Office, Dublin

Response from Irish Foreign Affairs Office, Dublin. Taoiseach. Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D. asked the Maltese authorities whether there was anything else they could do to assist. There was no further advice nor assistance the Maltese authorities could offer. With regard to the Irish Government seeking an independent judicial inquiry the Minister considers that such a move would imply a lack of confidence in the report of the Board of Inquiry and that would be likely damage our relations with Malta.
